A Sinhala and Tamil New year :
Traditional ethnic and cultural festival falls
every year on 14th and 15th of April and a weak long colorful sports
and religions events displays through out the island. Beginning
of a traditional new year for Singhalese Buddhist and Tamil Hindus.
It marks the changing of Pieces to Aires a Zodiac signs of the solar
circuit with astronomical value. All religious and cultural events,
customs and rituals observed in auspicious time. The changing time
is neutral period with religious practice and preparing and consuming
food, starting work, exchange of money all in auspices time. During
the season the traditional sweets will makes every home to offer
relatives and friend.
Kandy Perahera:
A centuries old annual colorful religious festival
dedicated to Temple of the Tooth during the July or August, a ten
days long night festival a colorful perahera with thousands of dancers,
drummers and more than hundreds of elephants dressed up and parades
through city routes. The month of August is festival month of the
country.
Wesak Festival :
Buddhist celebrated Wesak on the full moon day
of May. For Buddhist it is same as Christmas to Christian. The birth
of a spiritual leader Buddha, his enlightment and his death commemorates
the week day. Many decorations, colorful paper lanterns and huge
light up religious artworks erected roadside to mark the occasion.
Many Buddhists observe religious practices during the day of wesak
in temples. and offering foods, softdrinks, coffee, and tea at temples
as well as to road side commuters. Best time to visit the country
to view such events.
Vel Festival :
Vel is for Hindus an annual festival dedicated
to Hindu God and Goddess. During July or August the temples in Colombo
and some other cities, in Colombo vel cart dedicated to Skanda is
carried in a procession of about 7 km in street in Pettah to Wellawatta
a home to Hindu shrine. Also in Jaffna at Nallur Kandaswamy temple
holds colorful festival during August pulling chariot of skanda.
The shrines in Matale, Kandy, Nuwaraeliya holds the annual Vel festival
in grand way. Where can see fire walking by devotees and some extraordinary
rituals in vivid manner.
Church Festivals :
The Christian community celebrates church festivals
call annual grand Christian mass mainly dedicated to respective
saints. The century old church the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary situated
in the jungle 90 km North west of Anuradapura hold annual feast
twice a year March and August drew huge crowds, but last two decades
it was sealed to pilgrimage due to ethnic conflict and LTTE presence
in the area. In Colombo St Anthony’s church festival in June
drew many churchgoers and dedicated to seafarers and fishing community.
St.Sebastaian annual church festivals in Colombo and vicinity in
Kandana and Moratuwa celebrate grand way in every year. The 7% of
the Christian community celebrate Christmas and other annual events
in grand scale.
Kataragama Festival :
During the two week long festive season July and
August this sacred place attract many Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims
and Christians to watch colorful festival the firewalking, Kawadi
dance mostly Hindu and south Indian blended culture and art. Hindu
shrine dedicated to Skanda and many visitors appeal for divine aid
and assistance. The centuries old shrine complex home to all religion
and their faith.
