EAST COAST & NORTHERN PENINSULA

TRINCOMALEE :
The harbor is natural and largest and the best sheltered in the world, during WWII the harbor was a navel base for British and allied forces. The Eastern province capital home to Tamils, Muslims and Singhalese and more Hindu shrines, Roman catholic churches around Tricomalee area. The beaches are very clean and tidy and once many holidaymakers flocked to Nilaweli beach (16 km North of Trincomalee). The
beaches and resort sites are no mans area during two decades of war with LTTE separatist. Fort Fredrick was build by Portuguese and the Thirukoneswaram Hindu shrine is situated tip of the Swami Rock. The country's longest river Mahaweli (324 km) begins at Adam's Peak and reaches sea at 12 km south of the Trincomaleee known as Koddiyar bay. Southeast of the city the ancient Buddhist shrine is Seruwila build in 3rd century by King Kawantissa. At Kanniya hot water spring is also good tourist attraction. Well organized a Naval Dockyard home to allied forces during WWII now occupies Sri Lanka Navy and country's air force base at China bay also a strategic point during WWII. Farmers grow mixed crops and coconut plantation along with seasonal Paddy cultivation. You can see Palmyra palm trees growing in sand mix soil and gives many things for human use as same as the coconut tree gives. Monsoon rain falls to eastern belt during November to January.

ARUGAM BAY/POTUWIL :

East coast beachfront spot for holidaymakers to relax for days and weeks. Past two decades the area was neglected due to a LTTE presence and their separatist movement. Now it was open to hospitality trade, thanks to peace talks and end of hostilities between government troops and LTTE separatist. Muslims and Tamils community accounts majority. 10 km to Lahugala National park and Kumana Bird sanctuary is about 35 km south of Arugam bay. Distant from Colombo 322 km.

KALKUDA BAY/KALKUDA :

Kalkuda bay a white sandy beach is 46 km north of Batticaloa, once Portuguese and Dutch trading port. Kalkuda beaches are safe because the offshore reef that calms the water. Distance from Polonnaruwa 65 km.

JAFFNA :

Northern province and the peninsula's capital a home to majority of Tamil and Hindu community and strong hold of LTTE Tamil Tigers. Fought 2 decades of continues war with government troops for separate state in the price of human life of both parties, including innocent lives and destroyed billions of property. Once the thriving capital produced many educated professionals and rich society now immigrated to west due to decades long ethnic conflict. In the presence of Portuguese (1505-1656) and Dutch (1656-1796) and British (1796-1948) the majority of Tamils community set way to good education in English. Still the best schools, which were opened by missionaries in Northern peninsula produce, educated Tamil people like Doctors, Lawyers.Bankers and Accountants then they immigrate to west for good life. The people are hard working good farmers and grow rice, vegetables and fruits the banana, mango and grapes are abundance. Before the Portuguese arrived the Jaffna was ruled by Perumal and the city called Nallur now the home to famous kandaswamy Shrine and the colorful festival pay respect to God Skanda in the month of August every year even during the period of unrest. From centuries there are famous shrines and Kovills for Hindus, Churchs for Catholics and Temples for Buddhists in Northern soil indicates the presence of all religion in the past. At Kantharodai there are many numbers miniature Stupas and Dagobas said to be 2000 years old. The Buddhist visits famous temple at Naga dvipa Island (35 km south east of Jaffna) the Load Buddha to be visited the place to settle the dispute between two native ruling parties.
